Wild Sapphire Belly Dance

Wild Sapphire is a Tribal Fusion Belly Dance troupe made up of Krisy, Andi, and Genevieve. They began belly dance training together in 2003 under the direction of Narah and have been hooked on belly dance ever since. In 2006 they began performing and teaching independently as Wild Sapphire. In addition to American Tribal Style improvisation, Wild Sapphire is known for combining traditional Appalachian music, as well as modern country and pop, in conjunction with belly dance to create unique fusion pieces. They continue to take classes and workshops from many world renowned belly dancers and attempt to spread a love of belly dance to everyone they meet!

I have enjoyed dancing my whole life. I had formal dance training in ballet, and also studied Irish step, modern, salsa and swing dancing. I have studied and practiced yoga since 1995. I also recently started hoop dancing!

In 2003 I saw one of Narah's flyers and decided to try belly dance. I had been interested in belly dance because of its history as a means of preparation for childbirth. I also thought it would be good excersise and a fun form of dancing. I didn't know it would be addictive (:

In April of 2004 I did my first performance with my fellow classmates. Since then I have performed at several locations as well as in Narah's Fire of the Soul tour.

I started teaching belly dance in 2008 because I love this dance form so much and want everyone else to have the opportunity to experience the many amazing benefits it brings! To further my own training I attend workshops with many world renowned dancers and I am currently working on CabaRibaLusion certification through Ansuya's GypsyNet program.

In additon to dancing I am an RN, MSN and Family Nurse Practitioner.

When I was 12 years old, my grandmother brought home a bunch of belly dance fitness VHS tapes that she wanted me to try with her. That was my first encounter with belly dance and I’ve been hooked ever since.

In 2008, I began taking weekly belly dance fitness classes at the WVU Student Recreation Center. In 2009, I began taking formal classes with Genevieve. I am currently one of her intermediate students and a member of Saphera, Wild Sapphire’s student troupe.

I love belly dancing for far too many reasons to name, but I particularly appreciate it for the aesthetic of it, its value as a form of exercise, and the way it gives me such a strong sense of control over myself.

I’ve had no other formal dance training. I did, however, endure three years of rigorous physical training as a cadet in a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program in high school.

I am currently pursuing a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources at WVU
